About

Indian Timeline brings together clear, verified, year-by-year data stories about India and Indians — the economy, infrastructure, the digital economy and more — so you don’t have to hunt across dozens of reports, press releases and websites to understand how a single number has changed over time.

What we cover

Each topic is a single, focused page: a timeline, a year-by-year data table, the context behind the numbers, and the sources we used. Current topics include GDP, RBI gold reserves, foreign exchange reserves, public debt, the rupee against the dollar, petrol prices, Indian Railways, metro & urban rail, roads & highways, and the digital economy — and we add new ones regularly.

How we work

  • Primary sources first. We prefer official Indian sources — the RBI, MoSPI, ministries and the Economic Survey — alongside the World Bank, IMF and other recognised institutions.
  • Cross-checked. Key figures are checked against more than one source, and we state the basis (for example, fiscal-year vs calendar-year, or end-of-period totals).
  • Honest about uncertainty. Provisional or partial figures are flagged, and if we are not confident in a number we leave it out rather than guess.
  • Sourced on the page. Every topic lists the sources it draws on, so you can verify the data yourself.

A reference, not an official record

Indian Timeline is an independent project and is not affiliated with any government body or institution. Our pages are a helpful reference for understanding trends — for decisions that depend on exact figures, please consult the original official source.
